Artist paints Rubb a place in RAF history

RAF 5001 charity painting

A picture of the colourful work carried out by RAF Squadron 5001 is in the frame to raise money for charity.

Air Combat Service Support Unit 5001 Squadron routinely deploys around the world to provide and maintain expeditionary airfield facilities to support deployed air operations. The squadron has extensive experience working with Rubb military aircraft hangars and buildings.

The watercolour painting, by artist William Thompson, was commissioned by 5001 Squadron with funding provided by Rubb Buildings Ltd. It depicts Squadron personnel and equipment on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The four scenes shown are inspired by photographs taken by squadron members. Squadron Leader Mike Alden, Officer Commanding 5001 Squadron, presented the first print of the painting to Rubb Sales Manager Ian Hindmoor in April 2011.

Sqn Ldr Alden said: "We are extremely grateful for Rubb's generosity and support. This painting represents part of 5001 Squadron's history and the close working relationship between the Squadron and Rubb Buildings Ltd. The original has pride of place in our hangar at RAF Wittering where this will be preserved forever more. It depicts what we have been working on over the last five years.

Fifty prints, 25 large and 25 small, have been produced, with the first print presented to Rubb. The remaining pictures will be auctioned to raise money for Help for Heroes which provides support for our brave servicemen and women wounded in conflicts around the world."

Sales Manager Ian Hindmoor added: "We are always willing to support a good cause and we were keen to contribute towards Help for Heroes because of our longstanding relationship with the RAF." More than £900 has been raised for the charity so far.
