40 years of Rubb UK

Rubb ready to build on 40 years of experience

#RUBB40

Rubb Buildings Ltd has firm foundations in the North East’s manufacturing history. The company was launched in the UK in 1977 – back then its premises was surrounded by fields rather than the familiar business, industrial, retail and leisure landscape it now inhabits.

Industry innovator Finn Haldorsen started Rubb Buildings Ltd in England in 1977, following success in his home country of Norway – and he was looking for a team to help achieve his vision of establishing Rubb as the Rolls Royce of fabric structures. When the company was firmly established under the leadership of then MD Bill Wood, he moved to Maine, USA, and founded Rubb Inc in 1983.

Forty years later, Rubb Buildings Ltd now designs and manufactures temporary and permanent, engineered fabric super-structures. Highlights include ground-breaking aluminium framed military buildings (aircraft hangars, shelters, storage facilities), specialist steel framed sports buildings (including Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC training facilities), topflight aviation and MRO facilities, as well as structures for a variety of other sectors including ports, energy, construction, bulk storage and environmental (waste and recycling).

All products are designed and manufactured at Rubb’s UK plant at the Team Valley Trading Estate in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The company has a proud history of delivering innovative and quality structures to a wide range of clients. A family business ethos and low staff turnover has ensured a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field.

In 2011 and 2012 some key figures bid farewell to the company they helped to build up from the ground. They included Managing Director Bill Wood, who retired after 34 years of running the business, Design Engineer Ron Adams (33 years), Technical Sales Engineer Ian Mackley (34 years), Office Manager Liz Spurr (28 years) and Quantity Surveyor Mike Anthony-Mote (27 years). Former Sales Manager Ray Colby also retired in 2010 after 32 years of service. They left behind an experienced team ready to continue their good work and build on their successes.

Ian Hindmoor took the helm at Rubb Buildings Ltd in 2011 after scaling the ranks from Trainee Design Draughtsman to General Manager in just 12 years. He became Managing Director in 2013. He leads a team of dedicated employees, many of whom have been with Rubb since the start of their working lives, including Steel Production Manager Michael Halpin, PVC Production Manager Melanie Brewis, Stores Manager Bob Grieves, Quality and H&S Manager Stephen Jackson and Sales Manager Andy Knox.

Finn Atle Haldorsen, who took over as Rubb Group Chairman following the death of his father in 2005, said: "It's the skilled and long serving, loyal employees that have ensured Rubb Buildings Ltd's success over so many years."

Finn Haldorsen’s dedication to honesty, integrity and quality lives on in the Rubb Group today.

Managing Director Ian Hindmoor added: "Mr Haldorsen's ethos still thrives through the business to this day. We are proud of our history and very exited for the future."
