Government announces salt storage protocol for 2020/21

Many councils are focusing on preparing for winter, facing the threat of severe winter weather in the form of snow, ice, and flooding.

In preparation for this, the Department of Transport have announced they will be undertaking regular monitoring of salt stocks being held by highway authorities.

For this winter season (2020 to 2021), the DoT has retained an emergency salt stockpile of approximately 264,591 tonnes with a further 92,554 tonnes being held by Highways England. At £65 per tonne, this is a serious undertaking.

Local highway authorities have a responsibility to ensure that they are adequately prepared for winter by maintaining sufficient salt stock. In the independent winter resilience report, it was recommended that local highway authorities have a resilience benchmark of 12 days/48 runs—as recommended by David Quarmby’s report—for pre-season stockholding for English local highway authorities.

The UK’s salt producers, through the Salt Association, have provided reassurance that salt production nationally is where it needs to be as we move towards the 2020/21 winter season, and urges highways authorities at national and local levels across the UK to be as prepared as they can be to guard against any complacency in managing and maintaining their salt stocks.

With maintaining salt stocks as important as ever, robust and reliable salt sheds are a must for every authority. Rubb is recognised as a worldwide leader in innovative, practical and cost-effective salt storage building solutions.
