Rubb ships out to Australia to dismantle marine building

A&P Falmouth commissioned a Rubb building for the RFA Largs Bay on behalf of the MoD. This building was completed in October 2011.


The Largs Bay was sold to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and was renamed HMAS Choules. She was commissioned in December 2011 following modifications for the Australian RAN, including adaptations to ensure she can operate in tropical conditions and the addition of the Rubb onboard ship cover/helicopter storage building.

The team from Rubb headed Down Under after being tasked with removing the building from HMAS Choules. Their task was to dismantle the 15m span x 18m long Rubb NV structure.

The structure, featuring a sidewall height of 5m, included:

  • Galvanized roof and leg lattice steelwork with a 3m modular construction
  • PVC coated polyester structural fabric cladding on the roof and sidewalls
  • Main and auxiliary wind bracing cables in end modules
  • Manually operated roller shutter door in front gable
  • Three fire/access doors
  • Steel foundation ring beam

The building was successfully dismantled and stripped down to its component elements.

Site Supervisors Allan McKenna, David Cromarty and Trevor Sarginson completed the project and found the building had been well maintained with no damage to any of the structural elements, fittings or fixtures. The steel foundation ring beam was also been dismantled with no adverse effects to the ship’s deck. The building was packed and secured into the supplied 40ft Open Top ISO Container ready for transport and storage until future deployment.

Allan McKenna, who was also part of the team which constructed the hangar on the Largs Bay, said: “It was easy to dismantle, in really good condition and packed back into one container. This was removed from HMAS Choules and stored for later use. The project went very smoothly and took nine working days to complete.”

Ian Hindmoor, Rubb UK Managing Director, added: “This project demonstrates the relocatability of Rubb structures. They are easy to build, dismantle, store and relocate – which suits many of our clients, who must adapt quickly to changing logistical requirements.”
