St Mary’s Sports Centre builds on Olympic legacy

A multi-sports centre at a Dorset school has been hailed as a ‘fantastic resource’ and ‘first class facility’ which is helping to build on the legacy of London 2012.

St Mary’s C.E. Middle School opened its new facility in Puddletown on July 12th 2012 as the Olympic Torch passed through the town.

Rubb Buildings Ltd worked with main contractor Greenslade to provide a 20m span x 48m long sports hall with sidewalls of 5m, featuring a multi-use games area large enough to accommodate a full size basketball court.

The area, 8.4m high at the building’s apex, can also be adapted to accommodate a match-play volleyball court, a netball court with portable goals, a 18m x 33m 5-a-side pitch, four badminton courts or four mini games courts..

One year on, head teacher Carl Winch has spoken about what the Rubb sports hub has done for the school and town. He said: “The school was delighted to receive a grant for £500k from the Diocese of Salisbury to build the new sport facility. St Mary’s is a school where sport is greatly valued and this generous donation and the expertise from Rubb allowed us to construct a facility to enhance and further develop our existing provision. However, with a finite budget, we needed a building to meet our varying needs, and to provide excellent value for money. The structure offered by Rubb more than fitted the bill; both the school and the local community are delighted with the sports hall we now have on site.

“The service provided by the Rubb team was outstanding; we were consulted at all stages of the project and were regularly updated on the progress of the build. The on-site team literally worked all day, every day to ensure that our sports hall was completed by the agreed deadline – as a client, we could not have asked for more.

“The superstructure provides a cost effective solution for indoor sports and activities. We have a large playing area (the equivalent of four badminton courts), which can be divided to allow the use of the hall for multi-sports. In addition, our facility has changing rooms and a large storage area.

“The St Mary’s Sports Centre allows us to offer our children an enriched physical education curriculum, which includes badminton, basketball, indoor football, cricket, volleyball, and even archery. A year on, we remain absolutely delighted with our facility, which has allowed us to continue to build upon the legacy of London 2012 and ‘inspire youth’ to sporting greatness.

“The children of St Mary’s Middle School are emphatic in their thanks to the Rubb team for helping the dream to become reality. As a school we now have a fantastic resource – the Rubb structure provides an affordable option for a first class facility, which has made a difference to the lives of our young people.”

The structure features Rubb’s signature galvanized internal steel frame clad with durable PVDF coated fabric, providing dark juniper green walls and a white translucent roof. This allows natural light inside for a bright playing environment which saves on added energy costs.

Within the building there are two partitions which create a 20m x 9m storage area and a 20m x 6m changing area at each gable end respectively. Two roller shutter doors provide access to and from the storage area via the hall and outside. Three metre high steel cladding protects the building’s external walls.
